End of a LOTW Era

Posted 2007.01.30 1.00 in Computers/Internet/Technology by Stephanie

Around the same time I registered the domain name FelesMagus.com, I read something somewhere about fresh content and regular updates and whatever. To keep people coming back to a site over and over. Seemed like a good idea, although probably better suited to sites that are trying to either sell something, or trying to make money with advertising. This site is neither of those things.

Anyhoo, that idea spawned my Link of the Week. It was good, fun, sometimes wacky, and looking through the LOTW archives it’s amusing to see where my interests lay at any given time… the 4 or 5 weeks in a row on some esoteric topic, before flailing around randomly then settling for a few weeks on some other obscure interest.

However, these things must eventually come to an end. I maintained a few rules and I don’t think I ever broke them – never made a commercial site my LOTW, always something that was interesting or wierd or whatever. Still though, over the last few months it’s got harder and harder to find good links that I found interesting. Nobody ever suggested any either! Hmph.

So here we are. The blog has taken over linkage duty anyways. And I don’t have those self-imposed rules, so here, I can and do link to commercial sites if I see fit. The LOTW might return again, I’m not ruling it out. Just, it’s been a month and I haven’t found anything I wanted to make my LOTW.

So there it is. It’s put to rest, the main page has been updated, and the last archive has been made. And you know, five years, is not a bad run. I know I didn’t hit every single week over the duration, but I hit most of them. 5 years is a long time, I think, for anything on the web. Isn’t it?

Farewell, LOTW.

Another Late-Night Critique of Stoopid Commercials

Posted 2007.01.24 1.00 in Music/Movies/TV by Stephanie

So this commercial, I’ve seen it a few times. It’s been running a while so you might have seen it too.

The gist of it is there’s some guy, a white guy, wearing robes, walking through some quiet peaceful soundstudio. And he comes upon a poor little baby turtle that’s on its back, so robe guy – maybe he’s supposed to be a monk – stops and puts the turtle on its feet.

Then a few steps along, robe-guy stops at the edge of a little pond, where some poor goldfish is flopping about on the astroturf. He stops and picks the goldfish up, putting it back in the water.

There’s more to the commercial, but this is as far as I get. Every time I watch it, by this point I am wondering: When do we get to see robe-guy’s arch nemesis? Really, who is the jackass that’s always just 10 steps ahead, tipping over baby turtles and catching the fish and dumping them on the ground?

That’s what I want to know about.

Personally I think robe-guy has an evil twin. They were separated at birth (or maybe breakfast. Whatever.) and robe-guy thinks he just lives in an area populated with very, very stupid animals. But really it’s robe-guy’s evil twin, sneaking about endangering all the cutesy little critters. Robe-guy’s evil twin dresses the same, so he’s also a robe-guy, but he wears shades instead of glasses. It’s a subtle difference but that’s how we know he’s evil.

Not that there’s anything inherently evil about wearing shades. They only denote evil when you have an identical twin who dresses exactly the same except they don’t wear shades.

Anyhow, so robe-guy’s evil twin, anti-robe-guy, is maybe an anti-monk — if robe-guy is actually a monk and not just a confused mid-life-crisis guy. So robe-guy and the anti-monk…

That actually sounds like a good name for a tv show or comic book. Robe Guy and the Anti-Monk! Coming to a theatre / tv screen / comic book near you! Real soon! Maybe!

Anyways robe-guy and the anti-monk never meet, robe-guy doesn’t even know anti-monk exists, but he has no choice but to follow along, following the trail of upturned baby turtles, landed goldfish, and who knows what else. It’s not much of an existance — for either of them — but then, such is the life of a one-dimensional character stuck in a tv commercial.

Sometimes, it’s good to babble nonsensically.

More Fun Stuff in SL

Posted 2007.01.19 1.00 in Computers/Internet/Technology by Stephanie

So I guess there’s a point when you’ve been just about everywhere you want to be, done just about everything you’ve wanted to do, built most of the stuff you could think of building, and you start to wonder what else can you do. What’s left that’s fun and interesting and new.

And that’s about the time you start wondering what it might be like to be a kitty.

Not just any kitty either – an Itty Biddy Kitty.

Now maybe it’s just me but… I’ve been staring at my new Avatar for about 30 minutes as I run in circles around my virtual land… and seriously, I think it’s the cutest, second funniest thing I’ve seen. An itty biddy kitty, running at top speed, sometimes leaping, all around the virtual landscape.

Maybe you just need to be there, to appreciate it. Oh well. Here’s a pic of itty biddy kitty me, standing on a teleporter.

Happy *cough* *hack* New Year

Posted 2007.01.07 1.00 in Pointless Blather by Stephanie

Appearantly new years is here. Another year. New digits to remember, when writing cheques.

I’ve been very, very absent and more than a little discombobulated since around x-mas. Come down with a cold or flu or something that just won’t let go.

I’ve already been through two cycles of sore-throat-then-chest-cold, and this morning woke up with another sore throat again. Yesterday I was feeling marginally better too. So I think I’m going on to round three.

Got some various cold medicines that don’t seem to help a great deal but do make me feel loopy and dizzy. Well, the daytime formula does. The nighttime formula makes me loopy, dizzy, and tired. And the cough medicine… well don’t get me started. That guafenesin just makes me a little nauseous. And it tastes terrible.

So that’s one of the reasons why there’s been a huge lack of posts for some time. I’ve been busy being ill and unhappy.

The other reason is that I’m like totally addicted to Second Life. So when I’m not curled up in bed bleeding from the lungs from a huge coughing fit, I’m huddled at the computer, exploring a virtual world, where my avatar is in perfect health.
