Can you imagine what might be  more lame than driving around with a scrolling text display in the back window of your car, advertising your blog / website to anyone unlucky enough to get stuck behind you?

Fun With Computers: EeeTop Part I

Posted 2009.05.19 17.08 in Computers/Internet/Technology by Stephanie

I recently bought myself an Asus EeeTop computer – a not-so-new addition to Asus’ “eee” family. The Eee family began with the original EeePc (a 7″ sub-laptop) and has expanded to include a couple dozen variations of the sub-laptop, an “EeeBox” desktop, and now this EeeTop computer. I’ve heard that Asus is even planning to spin out an Eee division, so as to capitalize on the (virtually unheard-of) Eee brand name, without confusing people with the (almost unheard-of outside computer techy circles) Asus brand name.

But I digress.

Sitting On The Fence

Or rather, slouching on the fence. Slumping on the fence? Catching some rays, on the fence?

However you slice it, there’s always time to just stop, take it easy, and have some “me time” on the fence.

Chippy on the fence!

At least, until the paparazzi show up and start snapping those damn cameras at you…

Happy Victoria Day!

Posted 2009.05.18 9.07 in Pointless Blather by Stephanie

I always thought that Victoria Day was to celebrate Queen Victoria’s birthday.

However, if you believe everything you read on teh intertubes, appearantly it is also Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday too.

That is to say, that Victoria Day is to celebrate both Queen Victoria’s birthday, and the birthday of the current reigning monarch. Who is Queen Elizabeth II.

To make it more convenient, Queen Elizabeth II’s birthday was changed to May 24th by an official vice-regal proclamation. According to teh interwebz.

After that it got more and more confusing. About the only other thing that really sounded plausible that the Victoria Day weekend is also known as the May-Two-Four weekend because part of the official Canadian celebrations include buying a 24 and, well, celebrating.

So, cheers, eh?

Memorable Moments

You know how sometimes your mind just wanders along, random thoughts leading to other random directions, till finally you stop and wonder how the heck you ended up thinking about that?  No? Maybe it’s just me…

Anyhow, this morning my mind was wandering around, and I ended up reminiscing about a somewhat “exciting” moment from a few years back. It was what I call a Count The Fingers Moment. If you don’t know what that means then you’ve never experienced it. And if you do know what it means, well I hope you still have all ten of them (luckily, I do).

Domain Name Shenanigans

Posted 2009.05.12 15.20 in Computers/Internet/Technology by Stephanie

For a number of years, I’ve been using the same company for all my domain-name registration and nameserver needs. They aren’t the cheapest guys on the planet, and more than once I’ve been asked why I use a company that is ‘so expensive!’

We’ve all seen the ads after all, for places that offer domain names for $10, or $5, or $2.99 or whatever.

My response of course is, you get what you pay for – and if something seems too good to be true, then it probably is. The guys I use (continue to use, and recommend) are local, they have a bricks-and-mortar address, and have top-notch service. The very few times I’ve needed to call their support, it has been easy to get a real live person on the phone, and things are resolved quickly and professionally.

For that kind of service, I’m happy to pay a fair rate.

I just read this interesting advisory, which is a pretty good and succinct explanation of some of the pitfalls and hazards of domain registration, and why the ‘cheapest’ is not necessarily the ‘best’.

10 things you MUST know before you register a domain name with anyone.
