More Home Camera Repair

The codeine buzz didn’t last long, so in an attempt to draw my attention away from the unbearable seething agony in my mouth, I decided to have a go at repairing another camera.

Hanimex RangefinderToday’s victim subject was my Hanimex Rangefinder. I’ve looked high and low on teh interwebz but have yet to find any more information on this camera. I’m confident that it works like the Hanimex zone focus ZF35, and is almost certainly made by whomever made the ZF35. I have parts of the ZF35 manual, and between that information and what I’d ascertained when I originally disassembled part of the Hanimex, I am confident that a) my RF35 is functionally equivalent, b) the mechanical shutter operates at full speed when there is no battery power, and c) the metering system (when it works) uses an electromagnet to delay the shutter closing.

In other words, the shutter is cocked and released in a fully mechanical fashion. However, there is a small electromagnet (basically a small relay coil) next to an armature which, when released, closes the shutter. This armature has a small steel weight attached. Without any power whatsoever, the armature moves unimpeded and its maximum speed is probably 1/300th of a second. When the small coil is powered, this magnetically holds the armature in place until the current is removed. This delay is what allows the camera to employ slower shutter speeds.

Then the Codeine Kicked In…

Posted 2009.10.16 12.48 in Life On Drugs, Pointless Blather

So the dentist appointment is now on Saturday, but in the meantime they told me to see my doctor to get drugs. So I saw my doctor and she gave me drugs. Codeine for the pain and somethingomycin for the swelling.

And now I’m at work and the codeine just kicked in. I can tell because my fingers and toes went all tingly and there’s just the slightest touch of dizzy in the air. Nice dizzy, not cryptospam dizzy. There’s also a nice warm two-glasses-of-wine kind of cozy sensation in my tummy.

But my *&%**( tooth still %*&&*^ hurts!

However, the tingly codeine buzz makes me a little less tense about the pain thing.

Owwwwwwwww!

So much for all my bravado. Walk it off. Rub some mud on it. Wrong answer.

It hurts! Owie owie owie owie!

I made it about 3 or 4 hours from my last blob post before I was searching the yellow pages for a dentist. Got an appointment but not till Monday. In the meantime… holy moly it hurts. Constant nonstop pain, with occasional throbbing. It’s not that the level of pain is that high – it’s only about a 6 out of 10. With an occasional throb or pulse up to about a 7 or 8 out of 10. It’s the non-stopped-ness, the fact that it can’t be ignored, and the fact that it doesn’t ^*&^% respond to #$%# painkillers!

That and my jaw is swelling up so the pain isn’t just at one tooth any more. Damn it hurts.

I might end up calling the dentist again to see if he has any emergency openings today… I don’t know if I can last the weekend.
