2009 – The Year In Review

As the last hours of 2009 wind down, it seems like a good time to review the year, how it summed up against other years. And generally speaking, it fairly well sucked. There were a few good points, lots of sucky things, and overall, I think 2009 is getting a failing grade.

In fact 2009 was sucky enough that it actually reached back in time and ruined the last half of 2008. It was just that sucky. 2009 – The Year Of Suck.

So back to 2009. What were some of the good things? The whole aquarium thing has been a big positive. Sure it’s a bit of a money-sink, a lot of work, and some responsibility. But it’s very relaxing and enjoyable, and I can’t help smiling when I watch the fishies and snailies playing. Especially the wee babies. Les is doing well with the big fish, the nursery tank is full of snail babies and a couple corydora babies. All-in-all the aquarium stuff lets me forget about my own problems for a while and just observe their simple and care-free comings and goings.

Of course, I haven’t forgotten about my kitties. Misha and Pixie continue to amuse, bemuse, annoy, and purr. Misha is wonderfully affectionate when she wants to be. Even Pixie is getting affectionate now and then, in her own derranged way. Though I must add, even though it’s been four or five years, I still miss Sylvie, and think of him almost every day. It’s mostly happy memories though, so it’s all good.

What else? Photography – my interest in photography was rekindled in 2009 and I’m glad for that. I was unable to keep up my goal of doing a photography expedition every week, but maybe I can restart that in the future. The whole darkroom chemistry black and white thing is a lot of fun, I’m glad to be mucking about with that again. And I found a place where I can get colour chemistry, so I might even get into that next year too.

Then there was WordPress – I was briefly exposed to it in ’08 but it was some time in 2009 that I dove in and converted my site to WordPress. I’m ¬†happy with it, it’s a good platform and a good CMS. I also learned a bit of PHP and MySQL along the way which was interesting.

There may have been other good things – if I’ve forgotten any, then ‘oops’. Then there were the bad things. I’ll try not to dwell too much on them, but it’s hard not to, what with the Year of Suck and all.

So to kick it off, there’s the depression – that really got into high gear in the latter part of 08 but this was due to 09 sucking so hard it spilled over into the previous year. The depression then led into the cryptospam, which I’ve been on for all this time. First just one a day, then two, and now three a day. Except when I forget to take them. But with three a day, the ringing dizzies come a lot faster now, like by the afternoon, instead of a day later. So I remember to take them eventually. Just later.

Then there’s the whole losing-my-mind theme, which may or may not be related to the depression and the cryptospam. I definately feel less mentally stable than I remember feeling in the past. Forgetful, trouble focusing sometimes, easily distracted, and then I forget things.

There’s also the terrible crushing fatigue. Is it part of the depression? A byproduct of the insomnia? What about the sleep apnea? Or maybe it’s just another part of the whole. Regardless, it’s getting worse and it’s increasingly difficult to function.

Anyways, this is turning into a whine-fest and I didn’t want that, so I’ll cut it out.

So looking ahead, I’m cautiously hopeful that 2010 will be better.

I concur – and so does most of Twitter. Except for Neil. And Jory. Their 2009’s rocked. Good for them.
