Wet Pets

Here’s a random pic of a little get-together in my snail tank:

About 3 weeks ago I adopted some more snails. The big one here is an Apple Snail who’s been eating and growing like crazy. Hitching a ride on his back is a little Nerite snail. Taking a close look at the nerite is an African Dwarf Frog. And a bit blurry in the background are two female Bettas.

Wreck of a Weekend

Posted 2011.04.25 9.23 in Aquaria, Sports, Uncategorized by Stephanie

What a miserable crappy long weekend. The weather wasn’t as bad as forcast, though it was still fairly dreary. That wasn’t the worst of it though.

Thursday night was supposed to be good but instead I had to watch first Montreal, then Vancouver lose their playoff games. One disappointment after the next.

Friday was marginally better, with a new Fringe episode – although I didn’t think it was that great an ep. Too much telling, not enough showing.

Then Saturday night Montreal lost yet again. Three losses in a row now.

And last night was Vancouver’s turn to drop their third in a row. They were up 3-nil in the series, now it’s on to game seven.

And through all of this, my beloved pet snails had been dying off. I don’t know what the hell happened exactly, because the fish and frog in the same tank have been doing fine. Just all the snails died. The last couple died on Sunday. Including Little Buddy, who had been with me for nearly two years. He was my little methusela snail, the one who wouldn’t die. Till yesterday.

RIP Little Buddy.

What a crappy weekend. Nothing good came out of it, just disappointment and sadness.

So Many Eggs

How do they all fit in there? How does she have enough room for so many eggs inside her shell, without totally displacing her own body?

Snails: bigger on the inside than they are on the outside.

Snails n Bettas

Posted 2010.09.12 20.32 in Aquaria by Stephanie

Today there were some good “Kodak moments” in the aquariums… first my betta girls were mugging it up for the camera, then I got some good shots in the snail tank.

About the betta girls: I have four female bettas sharing a tank. They all came from the same brood (or litter or whatever its called) so they’re all sisters, were raised together and were living together along with a few dozen other sisters before I adopted them. So they’ve always been accustomed to each other and consequently they seem to be fairly tolerant of each other. They do have little chases now and then, and do flare at each other now and then, but generally they get along. Three are red with blue highlights and the fourth is blue with red highlights.

About the snails: This afternoon there was something of a “feeding frenzy” – albeit a slow, snail-paced frenzy. A couple snails were looking hungry so I tossed in some shrimp pellets… a food I normally don’t feed the snails. Well, they went nuts for it. Soon everyone was crawling over everything looking for shrimp. I had to put in a handful more pellets to ensure everyone got some. It was madness… slow motion, snail-paced madness. And it was hillarious to watch. Wow, they love those shrimp pellets!

A cupfull of snail babies (pea-size to marble-size) get released into the grown-up snail tank.

Where’s AppleSnail.net at?

Posted 2010.09.03 12.00 in Aquaria, Computers/Internet/Technology by Stephanie

It’s been a full week now since the website AppleSnail.net went down. I’m experiencing withdrawl. I need my snail-based chat fix.

Other people have noticed it is absent too – there are threads at Fishlore and Arachnoboards asking after AppleSnail.net. I don’t actually frequent either of those places, but my desperate Googling for AppleSnail.net related news found me those threads.

I miss all the regulars on the forum. I miss reading and talking snail exploits.

This morning when I woke up, I found one of my snails slowly sliming its way across my livingroom floor! I was shocked. Who can I tell about that? Where can I share pictures of baby snails?

I hope Applesnail.net comes back soon. I hope it’s not a permanent problem.

If not, I wonder if there’s a way to hook up with all the people from there? Like an emergency-backup forum for staying in touch?

So Many Snails

A couple days ago I was doing some big aquarium maintenance on the 38-gal snail tank. Basically I was bored of the black gravel and wanted to remove it, and do some redecorating.

I’ve done that sort of thing before and generally the corydoras and frogs know to cower in the opposite side of the tank to where I’m working. The snails however are too curious and tend to try and get in the way all the time.

So I temporarily hauled the lot of them out of the tank and plunked them all in the nursery with the babies.

It should be blatantly obvious but I’ll say it anyways: don’t overcrowd your aquariums! This was probably marginally acceptable because the situation only lasted for about 2 hours, and the nursery had been cleaned & had a water change before, and again after. But for the 2 hours, it was a 2 1/2 gallon enclosure of crazy snail claustrophobia…
