Busy Busy

Posted 2014.04.01 20.06 in iPhone, Work by Stephanie

Sorry the posts have been few and far between recently / the past few months / this year.

The good news – I’m barely depressed at all lately, so no doom-and-gloom posts to darken your days.

The ‘bad’ news – I’ve been so busy working on things, I keep forgetting to stop and make time to post about stuff.

I’m doing about 50% working on app-related things, and 50% working on my ‘regular day job‘ stuff. App stuff is fun and interesting, the day job stuff is…day job stuff. Plus, it’s tax-time which is always fun. You know, fun like dental surgery.

I’ve got a brand-new app I’ve been trying to finish for a week and a half now, but I keep finding new features to add and new bugs to squish. Then I have another update I want to push out for Overlord! – a minor bug squish and another new feature or two.

Then I have a Very Big update for Wicca Plus to get cracking on. More features, more goodies. I don’t want to spoil it, but if I manage to succeed at what I’m planning, it will be very nifty.

Busy Busy.

Overlord! Version 1.1 Released

Posted 2014.03.12 20.20 in iPhone by Stephanie

Overlord Update

Overlord! version 1.1 is now available on the App Store.

This version includes a couple new features that people have been asking for.

  • The #1 feature was to change the colour scheme. Turns out, Emergency Yellow just isn’t anybody’s favorite, so now there’s a variety of ‘flavours’ such as Cupcake, Grape, Tangerine, et cetera.
  • The second big freature is full calendar management – rather than just toggling what calendars to display or suppress you can now add, remove, or edit (name and colour) the calendars on your device.
  • Finally, alarm options for all-day events have been greatly improved and expanded.

Some other improvements include better handling of shared / cloud calendars, various bug fixes, and minor corrections.

For more information, please have a look at the Overlord! Calendar Replacement app page.

Overlord! is available in the App Store.

Wicca Plus 2.1 Released

Posted 2014.02.24 7.38 in iPhone by Stephanie

Version 2.1Wicca Plus version 2.1 has been released on the app store!

Two quick tips:

To set the app for Southern Hemisphere mode, go into Settings -> Wicca Plus -> North/South Hemisphere. I decided to do it this way as it’s likely something you’ll only need to do once, and it didn’t make sense to add the whole location framework for a function that’d only typically be needed one time.

Likewise, printing support is enabled in Settings. In Settings -> Wicca Plus -> Show Print Button can be toggled on and off. For those who do not have an AirPrint printer, or don’t need to print, the Print button doesn’t need to appear on the screen.

If you do want to print, toggle Show Print Button to on, and then it will appear next to the Edit button at the top right corner of your entries.

If you have any questions or comments, or you want to request a feature or have found a bug, you can reach me either through the Wicca Plus forums, or the Support page.

Cheers!

Wicca Plus v2.1 in the Works

Posted 2014.01.09 21.50 in iPhone by Stephanie

Work has begun on an update to Wicca Plus.

While I would prefer not to pre-announce new features / additions incase unforseen circumstances mean some things have to be dropped or delayed, there are a couple things which will definitely be included in the next release:

  • Southern Hemisphere Support – the sabbats section has been rewritten and a new option added to the Settings screen, allowing the app to correctly display the sabbats and lunar phases for everyone in the Southern hemisphere.
  • More Accurate Lunar Data – the Full and New Moon times were originally calculated using some math based on the average lunation period. This was only accurate to within plus or minus several hours, as the Moon’s orbit is not quite circular. I’ve now incorporated lunar data from a NASA website, which is accurate to less than 3 minutes from now till the end of the year 2100.
  • A New Font – this is purely cosmetic, but the Papyrus font is somewhat stale and old. I’ve found a new font which I rather like; hopefully this won’t draw more complaints than Papyrus did.
  • Change The Title – a new option has been added to the Settings screen, enabling users to change the title of the book. I have always called my book Liber Umbrarum et Lux but you can name your book as you see fit. This affects the Main / Contents page, and the Front Cover screen (in the Prefixes section.)
  • Minor bug fixes, performance improvements, and as always, corrections to spelling mistakes that slipped through the content editing.

New entries and some other new features are also in the works.

There’s no ETA for when this update will be out. Originally I had a tentative target date of Imbolc, but we got hit hard just after Yule by an ice storm and that has set things back by a week or more.

Overlord! Updated

Posted 2013.11.27 21.47 in iPhone by Stephanie

Overlord! is a calendar replacement app designed for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

It exists to fill a gap that I felt was left when Apple updated their own Calendar app a couple months ago, when they released iOS 7.

Specifically, they removed their calendar’s List View, and they crippled their Month View somewhat. Those were the two views I used exclusively. I was unhappy (and figured others might feel the same way.)

Consequently, I dug up Overlord! – originally an app for the Newton Messagepad 2000. I took the basic concept from that old Newton app, and built and expanded on it.

This update corrects a bug that affected multi-day events, and improves how multi-day events are handled and displayed.

Sixes and Nines

Posted 2013.11.09 10.01 in iPhone, Pointless Blather by Stephanie

So last Sunday, I sent up a new iPhone app for Apple’s approval. Still waiting to hear back from them on it. It’s a calendar replacement.

After iOS7 came out in September, I found they’d crippled their built-in calendar app by eliminating or neutering the two features I used most. List view, they eliminated completely, and Month view, they left in but totally borked.

After a week of frustration, it dawned on me to just go ahead and create the calendar app I wanted. And maybe other people would like it too.

It was a bit slow in coming out, as I first had to finish up Wicca Plus, then I had to learn the whole Event Kit framework as I’d never done any calendar stuff before. Anyhow, to learn more about it, you can see its product page here. I’m still waiting to hear back from Apple re. approval. Hopefully in the next few days it’ll hit the app store.

So with that out of the way, I’m now kind of unsure about where to go next. I have ideas for two more new apps, but I need to do more learning before tackling either of them. Or I could go back and start working on upgrades to existing apps.

I have almost a dozen new features to add to Wicca Plus… probably two months’ worth of work in there, actually.

But… I’ve sort of been working on iOS stuff non-stop since May, and I’m kind of starting to feel a bit of burn-out. Maybe I need a little break.

Then there’s my regular day-jobs, they still need attention too.

So, I’m not really sure what to do right now. Feels like a bit of a crossroads with no definite pull in any particular direction. Or equal amounts of pull in every direction.

As my mum would say, I’m at “sixes and nines.
