Theme Thoughts

Posted 2012.12.10 13.46 in Computers/Internet/Technology

Lately I’ve been feeling a little bit bored with the theme of this site.

I mean, I still think some bits are clever. And I like to think it’s easy to read… well not-difficult at least.

But it’s been around a while – a ¬†year? Two? I don’t remember.

It’s all based around radio transmissions (the post format is inspired by formal radio traffic forms) but I haven’t been active in amateur radio for ages — in fact I wasn’t an active ham when I created this theme.

On the other hand, it works and I’m lazy, so odds are it’ll persist a while longer.

Or not. Maybe I’ll play around with it, or bits of it, here and there.

Colour? Or no colour.

I don’t know, as long as it loads fast – that’s the main thing.

I should also do some editing and pruning… I think there’s around 60+ static pages, most of which haven’t been updated in forever, discussing topics I’m no longer involved in.

Oh but if I move them around or purge stuff, that’ll break links and what-not… Maybe I’ll just add a banner warning that I’m no longer actively blah-blahing the blah.

Whatever… my train of thought derailed at the last bend and I’ve forgotten what

Waiting Again

Posted 2012.07.31 9.12 in Computers/Internet/Technology, Pointless Blather

Back to the waiting once again. I hate this part.

There was a week or two there where I managed to distract myself with some photography fun, had a nice daytrip and that sort of thing.

But now it’s just back to waiting, hoping the mailperson brings me some goodies.

I’ve about exhausted all the coding and testing I can do using the partialy-built-out rejected board. I’ve added more modes, more functions and features. But I can’t add or test sensors without building them, and I can’t do that on the reject board – I have to wait for the good board before soldering the expensive bits.

Here is one of my favorite new features – it’s not useful or informative, it does not accomplish anything. It’s just fun to look at. That’s right, it’s Conway’s Game of Life running on the ISEB-6 Mk II.

Hey, with 128kB of flash and 16kB of ram, there’s room for all kinds of crazy stuff in there.

Hey Bacteria: What the Hell?!

Posted 2011.10.12 8.22 in Life On Drugs, Pointless Blather

It’s been a full month now since I first saw my doctor about my left leg. Am I all better now?

No. Not even close. I can’t say for sure if it’s worse or not, but it sure isn’t better.

It hasn’t been a full month of treatment, mind you. Not yet. The first five days were taken up with separate sessions with the x-ray machine, and two different sets of ultra-sounds, by two different technicians, in two different offices.

So treatment-wise, it’ll just be reaching the 4-week mark in a couple days.

Since the treatment started, I’ve had four different antibiotics. Two of them intravenously, three of them in pill form. There was also the NSAID for the inflammation.

Has any of it worked?

I don’t really know. I think the IV was starting to work but then my doctor switched me over to pills.

The pills sure haven’t worked. The first ones didn’t do a darn thing, that’s when I ended up going to the hospital. And since the IV, the pills haven’t done anything either. Not the first lot. And the second lot seems to be coming up useless too.

So hey you bacteriums down there? What the hell do you want from me? Bugger off, I’m done with you jerks!

These guys are jerks.

The score so far:

  • Cephalexin pills: Useless.
  • Naproxen pills: Useless.
  • Cephazolin & Clindamycin¬†together by IV: Maybe helped, a bit.
  • Clindamycin pills: Useless.
  • Ciprofloxacin pills: Useless.

Ow!Box!

What do you get when you mix electronics, boredom, a pinch of depression, and a warped sense of humour? Well, an Ow!Box! is one possibility…

Yes, it’s a fun-for-all-ages way to cause a little pain — without leaving any pesky scars or evidence. Just touch the two screwheads and crank up the juice. How long can you last? How much can you take?

Impress your friends, baffle your family, make it into a drinking game, or just wire up some chairs around the house.

The function is simple: Power from a 9v battery is run through a 555 timer chip to create DC pulses. These pulses are used to trigger a simple transister, which tweaks the primary winding of a step-up transformer. The secondary winding of the transformer is wired to the neon bulb as well as the touch contacts. A BNC port also allows the signal to be routed….elsewhere.

Put in a fresh battery, turn it on, and have fun!

WTF is a Totodile?

Posted 2010.03.17 22.34 in Computers/Internet/Technology

So there’s this new game that just came out for the DS, called Pokemon. I don’t really get it. There’s these wild semi-magical beasties that you catch, squish them down into little balls, then release them now and then and force them to fight each other for entertainment and money.

Anyhow, it came with a pedometer that connects wirelessly to the game card, and I wanted to know how it worked.

Before I got out the magic screwdrivers and scalpel, I did play with it for a bit. I got a Totodile, and I named him Bungee. He defeated a bunch of other wild creatures. He can scratch and squirt water and glare menacingly.

But then I got bored and started prying things apart…

The cartridge casing looks black, but it’s transparent – you can shine light through it. The big chip is the ROM, it’s 1Gb (128MB). The smaller chip above that is a flash ram for the game saves, it’s 4Mb (512kB). At the top is the IR transceiver bit, below that is an oscillator. The chip on the right is some kind of microprocessor.
