Be Prepared to Evacuate

Posted 2012.11.27 13.04 in Life On Drugs, Pointless Blather by Stephanie

So this tweet turned up on my twitter tweetalog. Tweet tweet.

This raises some key questions:

  • Do they know something I don’t?
  • Is this because xmas is coming and this is my one and only warning?
  • Should I be stocking-up on canned food, bottled water, and ammunition?
  • And if you follow the link in the tweet, it takes you to a page at Brampton City Hall. There’s a photo of an evactuation on the page… where the fsck was that picture taken? Cos it sure as hell wasn’t in Brampton. (Or if it was, I need to get out more.)

Fleeing the Not-Brampton! Seriously, is this even in Canada?

Oh, maybe this is that Mayan 2012 thing? There’s just over 3 weeks left till the world ends. But if the world ends, where are we supposed to evacuate to? I think BEMO needs to provide us a map or something…

Where’s at?

It’s been a full week now since the website went down. I’m experiencing withdrawl. I need my snail-based chat fix.

Other people have noticed it is absent too – there are threads at Fishlore and Arachnoboards asking after I don’t actually frequent either of those places, but my desperate Googling for related news found me those threads.

I miss all the regulars on the forum. I miss reading and talking snail exploits.

This morning when I woke up, I found one of my snails slowly sliming its way across my livingroom floor! I was shocked. Who can I tell about that? Where can I share pictures of baby snails?

I hope comes back soon. I hope it’s not a permanent problem.

If not, I wonder if there’s a way to hook up with all the people from there? Like an emergency-backup forum for staying in touch?

Alchemist On Call?

I had no idea Alchemists did housecalls – but this afternoon I happened to look out my window and saw a mobile Alchemy van parked on the road with his 4-way flashers on.

Mobile Alchemy Van

I presume that there was some kind of alchemical emergency and he was dispatched immediately to quell the situation.

Though I can’t help but be curious – which neighbor was suddenly in need of emergency alchemical assistance?

May Day? May day. Mayday!

Posted 2009.05.01 21.16 in Pointless Blather by Stephanie

In radio communication, a call of Mayday-Mayday-Mayday is the official distress call. When using ‘morse code’, the official distress signal is SOS, transmitted as dot-dot-dot-dash-dash-dash-dot-dot-dot. They say it stands for ‘save our souls’ but I’m pretty sure that’s a myth- SOS was chosen because dot-dot-dot-dash-dash-dash-dot-dot-dot was easy to signal with a code keyer. Prior to 1910ish, the official wireless signal was CQD, dash-dot-dash-dot, dash-dash-dot-dash, dash-dot-dot. The myth is that this means ‘come quick, danger’ but ‘cq’ is code for ‘seek you’ and the ‘d’ was added to perhaps mean danger, or perhaps not… in any event, CQD was the distress call before 1910.

The first of May is also known as May Day, it is a holiday in may countries in the EU.

This morning, when I was thinking about all this, there was a point. I had something on my mind, something I wanted to write about.

Now, though, it’s all gone. I don’t remember what I was thinking about, only that it was a Mayday sort of thing…
