No End In Sight

Posted 2012.12.21 8.05 in Pointless Blather

So 06:12 came and went. The cats and I are still here. From what I can see out the windows, Brampton is still here. From what I can see on the internet, the rest of the world is still here.

Looks like we dodged a bullet there.

Admittedly there’s still some hope – maybe the end started at 06:12 but is on a slow burn. Maybe this is the little calm where we all breath a sigh of relief, right before POW!

Just in case, I’m staying on End-O-The-World-Watch for the rest of the day.

World End?

Six-Twelve

Just an update on the end-of-the-world stuff.

I’ve read that the exact moment of the Solstice is apparently 11:12 UTC, which would put it at 06:12 here in the eastern standard timezone (aka Toronto, New York, etc.)

Clearly that’s way too early for a normal person to be intentionally awake, so my only chance of seeing the world end depends on my insomnia and sleep apnea.

Or I guess if the whole ending process takes more than a few minutes, then I can wake up in time to catch the third period.

Additionally, if you’re planning a big End-O-The-World party for Friday night, you’re either going to be celebrating the world not-ending, or you’re going to miss the whole thing. Depending on how it pans out.

Personally, I think I’ll raise a glass on Thursday night, and hug my kitties extra close.

Seven Days and Counting

Posted 2012.12.14 13.15 in Life On Drugs, Pointless Blather

Mayan CalendarSo maybe if you’re apocalypse-minded you’re thinking that next week the world is going to end? It’s just seven days till the winter solstice. December 21, 2012.

Offhand I can’t remember if the world was supposed to end at the sunrise, or the sunset. And then, was that for which timezone?

Of course, there’s a chance the world won’t end at all. Saturday December 22nd might just be another day like every other.

I assume there are lots of big partys planned for next Friday – though if the end comes at sunrise then maybe the parties should be Thursday night?

Actually to be safe, maybe we should plan to party from Thursday evening straight on through till Friday night? Or Saturday morning even.

If the world doesn’t end, I predict a lot of hangovers come Saturday morning, that’s for sure.

I wonder how many people are afraid, versus how many are secretly (or not-so-secretly) looking forward to it.

Personally, I’m in a dark place right now, and I just feel blah about the whole thing. Take it or leave it, you know?

  • If it ends, I’ll want to see it, I hope it won’t hurt, and I’ll miss my cats.
  • If it doesn’t end, it’ll just be back to the same-old same-old routine, I guess.

Or there’s the third option – that it won’t be the end of the world, just the end of the world as we know it.

That’s kind of the wild-card. Maybe it’ll be a huge social-political-spiritual-economical-geographical upheaval that means we all have to start over from scratch. Or maybe not all – maybe only some. For the others, it might still be the end of the world.

Either way, I predict next Friday will be an Interesting Day™.

What if 2012 Came Early?

Posted 2010.06.01 10.34 in Pointless Blather

This morning on my drive to work, I suddenly wondered, what if the end of the world came early?

Like, all the doomsday talk seems to be about December 21st, 2012. Mayan calendars and Nostradamus and whatever. So everyone thinks there’s another 2 1/2 years to get ready or prepare or live it up or what-not.

It’d be all like WTF if the world ended ahead of schedule, and all the prophesy folks would be right and wrong at the same time and everyone would be annoyed because armageddon came early.

2009 – The Year In Review

Posted 2009.12.31 17.59 in Pointless Blather

As the last hours of 2009 wind down, it seems like a good time to review the year, how it summed up against other years. And generally speaking, it fairly well sucked. There were a few good points, lots of sucky things, and overall, I think 2009 is getting a failing grade.

In fact 2009 was sucky enough that it actually reached back in time and ruined the last half of 2008. It was just that sucky. 2009 – The Year Of Suck.

So back to 2009. What were some of the good things? The whole aquarium thing has been a big positive. Sure it’s a bit of a money-sink, a lot of work, and some responsibility. But it’s very relaxing and enjoyable, and I can’t help smiling when I watch the fishies and snailies playing. Especially the wee babies. Les is doing well with the big fish, the nursery tank is full of snail babies and a couple corydora babies. All-in-all the aquarium stuff lets me forget about my own problems for a while and just observe their simple and care-free comings and goings.

Of course, I haven’t forgotten about my kitties. Misha and Pixie continue to amuse, bemuse, annoy, and purr. Misha is wonderfully affectionate when she wants to be. Even Pixie is getting affectionate now and then, in her own derranged way. Though I must add, even though it’s been four or five years, I still miss Sylvie, and think of him almost every day. It’s mostly happy memories though, so it’s all good.
