Going Postal

Posted 2011.06.24 16.27 in Pointless Blather

Dear whomever at Canada Post made the decision to lock-out the postal workers:  FUCK YOU.

I’m not pro-union and I don’t support striking, so up till mid-June I was on the side of Canada Post. However I wasn’t actually upset or pissed off with anyone: the rotating strikes were not that bad.

As a customer of Canada Post, and as a small business woman, I was relieved that the rotating strikes were not too disrupting. I also believe that they still did a good job of calling attention to the situation. It was the best of a bad situation, in my opinion.

I’d have even been happy with 3-day-per-week delivery, though you assholes never even gave that a chance. Three-day-per-week delivery was announced on the Monday, rotating strikes happened in major centres on the Tuesday, and on the Wednesday you’d locked them out.

Slow service was tolerable. No service is not.

It’s utter bullshit that the rotating strike was “too much uncertainty“. You know what is too much uncertainty? Having no fucking mail service at all, and not knowing when it will resume.

And now I’d also like to extend a hearty FUCK YOU to the NDP as well. Normally I don’t have anything against you guys and I do believe there is a place in our society for some socialist values. I’m grateful for our health care system and I don’t mind paying my taxes to help support our Canadian way of life.

However, these bullshit delaying tactics you are doing are not helping anybody. It’s hurting small business and small business is a significant part of our economy. How many small businesses are going to have to lay people off or fold completely because their invoices can’t get out, they can’t collect their receivables, or they rely on Canada Post to move product for their customers? How are you helping them?

So, to the Canada Post decision makers, and the NDP: Fuck you.

Fuck you very much.

Winter Sux

Posted 2010.12.14 11.49 in Pointless Blather

It’s crazy. It’s not even winter here yet. And I already hate it.

In fact it feels like I’m hating winter more and faster than I remember in previous years. It hasn’t really snowed much here yet, but don’t care so much about snow. It’s the cold. And it’s the way so many people forget how to drive when there’s white stuff blowing around.

Cold – it seems like it’s damn cold out, and in. Like, Suddenly: Deep Freeze! Yet it’s not really that cold, when you look at a thermometer. It’s only mid-December.. what am I going to feel like when we get to February and the -40’s? Actually, I don’t want to know. I want to hibernate.

Then there’s the way people drive… Oh my Gods.

We get this white shit every year. Why is it always a shock to people? Why don’t people learn to fucking drive on snow? “Oh christ there’s snow on the ground – I better go into panic mode and act like I’ve forgotten how to use a car!”

One thing I’ve made a point of doing every year since I got my license, is when we get some snowy/icy/slippy weather, I’ll find an empty road or parking-lot, and practice driving in bad conditions. It’s not magic. You can learn this stuff. It varies from car to car, and it’s good to stay in practice. All you need to do is first, learn what your vehicle feels like as it is losing traction or just starting to slide. Then you learn how to deal with it. Most of it is common sense. I’m sure there’s even places you can go, to specifically learn how to drive in poor conditions.

So here’s the deal: If driving in the snow makes you feel so scared and tense that you have to go at 10km/h with your four-way blinkers on, if you’re on the verge of panicing when another vehicle goes past you, if you can’t stop at a stop-sign that you can see 250 meters away, then stay the fuck home. If you don’t know how to drive in the winter, then just don’t do it.

Postal Service

Posted 2010.12.10 23.11 in Pointless Blather

Hot on the heels of my rant about the rate increase on stamps, here’s another one about postal service. Postal Service, by the way, is a phrase known in grammatical terms as an oxymoron – that is, something which is self-contradictory. Other examples include military intelligence and jumbo shrimp.

Enough grammar, on with the rant.

So I’m waiting on a couple parcels coming through the mail. I know, bad time for shipping stuff, and frankly I’d rather use Fedex or DHL and pay the extra $$ for overnight delivery. But this particular merchant only offered UPS and mail, and the only thing worse than mail is UPS.

So I’ve got the tracking numbers and I’ve been watching the tracking screens on a regular basis. Yesterday one of the packages cleared customs and was in the big sorting station that’s about 15 miles from here. No updates after that. I had hoped it might come today, and they usually bring parcels at about 9:30 in the morning so I stayed home till then, just in case. But the tracking still said it was at the sorting station.

Now just a few minutes ago I happened to look at the tracking site again, and was surprised to find this:

The top line caught my attention first – attempted delivery? Notice card left? 16:07?! I was home before 4pm, and nobody attempted anything at 16:07 – still, I went and checked the mailbox incase there was a stealth visit. Nothing there, of course.

So I look closer and then I see the second line. Aha. So at 16:06 the package went ‘out for delivery’ then a whole 1 minute later they attempted to deliver it but I wasn’t home, so they left a card. In other words: Lies.

I’ve caught them playing this game before.

What they really do is, say Fuck it, and don’t bother coming by at all. They take the package directly to somewhere that it can be picked up. Then they drop the notice card with the regular mail sorting so that it turns up with the following day’s regular mail.

So Monday, the notice card will show up with Friday’s date on it, and it will tell me that my package has been waiting for me since Friday night at some postal outlet.

And for this level of service, they’re raising the rates again next month! Yay for Canada (expletive deleted) Post!

What a Week that Was When?

Posted 2010.10.26 22.00 in Life On Drugs

Time is speeding up and slowing down again. It seems like there’s all the time in the world, then I blink and a week has gone by.

And what a week! Or what a fortnight! It’s been a tumultuous week or two. I don’t remember if I’ve mentioned some of this stuff yet or not – short term memory is affected.

It all started when I got really low on my brain meds. See, the shrink had got me on these two drugs, cryptospam and wellbutrin. He’d give me a perscription that would last just long enough till the next time I’d see him, then he’d give me more.

Only this time, the staff lost my appointment, and the soonest they could schedule a new one was 6 weeks later. I’m like, well not only does that suck, but I’m going to run out of meds. He was very specific about me not missing even one dose. And they’re like, …

Literally – they had no comment. So I asked, could he contact the pharmacy and send in a renewal? Then they say, no that isn’t how it works. Go to the pharmacy and have them contact the doctor, that’s how it works.

So when I’m ready to need more, I go to the pharmacy and let them know and they fax the paperwork in. No worries. A few days later I run out, and go in, and ask for the renewal and they haven’t heard from the doctor yet. They fax it again. I leave.

Come back again a few days later. No word. They call. Can’t get through. I call. The staff don’t answer phones there, you have to leave a message, which they will ignore then call you back a day or two later and ask what you wanted. At one point the pharmacist gave me a couple pills, enough to get through the weekend, since we were all pretty sure things would be resolved soon.

A few days later, the resolution was still forthcoming.
