No End In Sight

Posted 2012.12.21 8.05 in Pointless Blather by Stephanie

So 06:12 came and went. The cats and I are still here. From what I can see out the windows, Brampton is still here. From what I can see on the internet, the rest of the world is still here.

Looks like we dodged a bullet there.

Admittedly there’s still some hope – maybe the end started at 06:12 but is on a slow burn. Maybe this is the little calm where we all breath a sigh of relief, right before POW!

Just in case, I’m staying on End-O-The-World-Watch for the rest of the day.

World End?

Tax Time

That time once again. It seems like it comes around every year like this. Income tax. Bleargh.

I try not to procrastinate, I try to be good. Well when I say try, what I mean is that I think about it. I start thinking about doing my taxes in February. It’s a chore though and seems tiring, so thinking about it makes me sleepy.

Then March comes around, and I think about it some more. By March, all the various forms and receipts have usually arrived in the mail. I know I ought to sit down and do it. It’s not too bad if I space it out over two weekends – a couple hours the first weekend to sort & add up my receipts, then a couple hours the next weekend to fill in all the forms and do the maths and figuring.

Then April comes in and I realize I really have to get serious and set aside some time for it. Maybe just one weekend instead of two. If I spread it out over Saturday and Sunday, then it’s not so bad, two smaller chores instead of one big one. Still, it’s no fun, and all the maths and numbers make my head hurt. Then the headache makes me sleepy.

And ultimately, I find myself with about 30 hours to the deadline, sitting up at 2:00am with a calculator, notepad, and a zillion slips of paper, trying to get through it without falling asleep.

Next time, I’ll be good. I won’t procrastinate.

Come to think of it, I’ve got like 30 hours or so left, I might just go to bed and finish this stuff later.

Sleeping In

Posted 2009.10.21 10.29 in Pointless Blather, Work by Stephanie

So far this week I’m three-for-three on sleeping in. This is unusual for me, between all my various sleep disorders. Don’t worry though – despite the extra sleep I’m still waking up exhausted, so it’s not like I’m feeling better for it.

It’s just odd, normally I wake up when the alarm starts, and then lay there for a while trying to muster the energy to get up. So far this week, I’ve woken in the wee hours, like 4am or 5am, gone back to sleep, then not roused again till 8-ish.

My alarm goes off at 6:30 and, if left untouched, will continue to go for a full 60 minutes. At which point it gives up and goes quiet. I know the alarm is working, I’ve checked and verified it’s set, armed, loaded, and so forth. I’m confident it is going off as usual, but I’m just sleeping through it.

I wonder though, why I’m suddenly and consistently sleeping in?

  • Perhaps the changing seasons – it is definately harder to get up in the morning when it’s dark out, and I’ve noticed that by 8-ish when I wake, it is at least a little bit light out.
  • Perhaps the effort of healing my jaw from the tooth-pullage and infection, is leaving me more-weary than usual.
  • Perhaps it is the drugs – although I’ve stopped taking the heavy stuff – maybe the anti-biotics and ibuprofen are reacting to make me extra sleepy.
  • Or maybe it is some combination of all of the above?

Whatever it is, I’m not exactly complaining… but it doesn’t look good when I’m late for work 3 days in a row. Although ‘late for work’ is a relative term… with no fixed or set time for work to start, it’s not technically possible to be ‘late’. I suppose 9:00am is the generally accepted time for the start-of-work… still, when you’re self-employed, it’s fairly easy to declare a flex-time policy is suddenly in effect.

Or what do they call those days at school, where it’s a late-start or early-dismissal? It’s not a full-fledged PA day, but the students either get to sleep in, or get to leave early, so the teachers can do some official business…

Anyhow, whatever. Sleeping-in. It’s not a bad thing.

Sleeping In

Sometimes, it’s all right to be late.

Sometimes, you just have to sleep in.

And that’s ok.
