New Blog Software

Posted 2009.03.17 10.27 in Pointless Blather by Stephanie

I’ve decided I’ve had enough of reinventing the wheel, and am migrating my blob from my own homebrew software into WordPress.

Sooner or later it’ll ‘go live’ with the new software.  The only question is, will I migrate before, or after, I have got my style customized the way I want it.

Holy Crap! A New Post!

I know, I know – it’s been a forever or two since I last had anything to say. I was thinking about just deleting the blog since I wasn’t using it. But, I’ve finally crawled out from Second Life (for a little while at least) and done something else with my spare time.

I’ve written a few times about my beloved Toshiba Libretto – a sub-mini notebook computer. I love small-format computers, and would dearly love for Apple to come out with one. Their Airbook is a good first attempt, but it’s still too big. They need to cut it in half, give me an 8 inch screen and chicklet-sized keys, before I’m interested.

Anyhow, the Libretto is a fine machine and running my customized Damn Small Linux variant, it is reasonably useful for surfing and telnetting / sshing in to the office. Still, it’s slow. No getting around the fact that it’s only a 166MHz processor (Pentium MMX) and the RAM is limited at 64MB. Everything else works ok (2.5″ IDE HDD, two PCMCIA slots, WVGA screen [800×480], expansion via docking station, etc). But, it’s slow. The version of firefox that runs on it is limited and slow, and there’s not much else that can be done with it.

So, slow, but working. To be honest, I wasn’t looking for a replacement. But I happened to be telling a friend about it, and she mentioned the Asus eeePC – a modern sub-mini notebook that ran Linux.

So, I checked it out, did some research, read some websites, and was instantly hooked. It’s got a 900MHz CPU (underclocked to 630MHz), came with 1GB of RAM (expandable to 2GB), built in wireless networking, built in webcam, built in SD card reader, 3 USB ports, 8GB solid state hard drive… the goodness just went on and on. The screen was the same specs as the Libretto – 800×480 – and although the form factor was slightly different, it is approximately the same volume and weight as the Libretto. (It’s a bit thinner, but a bit wider.)

Well. I had never heard of the thing up till Sunday night. By Tuesday I had bought one. Wednesday I bought the extra RAM and did the upgrade (which includes switching to a new kernel). And today I have hacked in an internal Bluetooth adapter. 🙂

So yep – I’m happy. I’ll try and post some more goodies as I mess with it more. In the meantime, here’s a picture of my “Eeepster” and a link to a great resource site – the Unofficial eeePC Community site.

Happy *cough* *hack* New Year

Posted 2007.01.07 1.00 in Pointless Blather by Stephanie

Appearantly new years is here. Another year. New digits to remember, when writing cheques.

I’ve been very, very absent and more than a little discombobulated since around x-mas. Come down with a cold or flu or something that just won’t let go.

I’ve already been through two cycles of sore-throat-then-chest-cold, and this morning woke up with another sore throat again. Yesterday I was feeling marginally better too. So I think I’m going on to round three.

Got some various cold medicines that don’t seem to help a great deal but do make me feel loopy and dizzy. Well, the daytime formula does. The nighttime formula makes me loopy, dizzy, and tired. And the cough medicine… well don’t get me started. That guafenesin just makes me a little nauseous. And it tastes terrible.

So that’s one of the reasons why there’s been a huge lack of posts for some time. I’ve been busy being ill and unhappy.

The other reason is that I’m like totally addicted to Second Life. So when I’m not curled up in bed bleeding from the lungs from a huge coughing fit, I’m huddled at the computer, exploring a virtual world, where my avatar is in perfect health.
