Tastes Like Plastic

Frozen “General Tsao” chicken, and microwave rice.

After suffering alone all day long in pain from my leg, it’s the best I could manage for dinner.

If I was designing the packaging, the phrase “You Can Really Taste The Plastic!” would feature prominently. Perhaps inside an exciting gold star, or in bright friendly red letters.

Thank the Gods for Sriracha sauce, otherwise this would have been a really crappy thanksgiving dinner.

Meh.

That’s how I feel. My leg is not getting better fast enough. It’s cold out. I’m unenthusiastic about everything.

Meh.

Can’t even think of anything that would cheer me up.

Cameras just remind me that I can’t walk around and take pictures.

I’m still burned out on electronics.

Fish and snails… burned me out last week. I forgot to blob about that. I did make a post about it though at Applesnail.net.

It’s a long weekend coming up. Thanksgiving. Not feeling very thanksful at the moment, though I realize that I do have a great many things to be thankful about.

Anyways, turkeys are annoying.

This Week is off to a Bad Start…

It’s like the set-up for a joke, really.

First, despite the antibiotics and anti-inflamatories, my leg seems to be getting worse, not better.

Then at work, I notice I seem to have a fever.

So I call my doctor and she’s like, yeah, actually you should go to the hospital. Now.

So I go home first, and while I’m there I check the mail.

And the first letter I open starts with “Dear Prospective Juror…”

Now I’m off to the hospital, to see what else the day has in store for me!

Cavalcade of Fail

This past weekend I was excited to get out of the house and take some more snapshots with my ‘new’ Hawk-Eye box camera. For good measure I also brought along my Minolta Autopak 700 rangefinder.

It was a super-bright sunny day, one of those bright-blue-sky-hard-shadows days, that mean sunny-16, aka EV+15 for the camera exposure. So my Hawk-Eye was loaded with some ISO 100 film which I figured could handle being overexposed and would also be ok if there were some clouds later.

I picked up my sister and we set out to visit a small waterfall that we’d read about. It was supposed to be an all-but-unknown yet very easily-accessable site.

Trail, Trees, Falls

When we arrived, we discovered that the trail was not long but it was a little difficult, and involved some hiking through the woods, and some slightly steep ups and downs. I was completely unprepared of course, wearing simple sandals — I had not even thought to bring my safety hiking sandals with the good treads and the ankle support. Also, someone else forgot to invent them.

Still, after the anticipation and the drive and all, we pressed on. And of course, I managed to trip and send myself flying. I remember as I started going over, very briefly thinking “Oh shit! The cameras!” but there was no chance to do anything about it.

I had been carrying 80-year-old Hawk-Eye in my hand, while the Minolta was around my neck on a strap. Then the Hawk-Eye was off doing some travelling of its own: first completely airborne, but then hitting the ground, it started rolling end over end a little ways down the path. The Minolta meanwhile, tethered around my neck, just swung outwards and met the hard ground face-first, a split second before I did nearly the same thing.

Not a Photoblog

I figured I’d just slip this comment in here – this isn’t a photoblog, it’s just that I’ve been on a photography kick for the past month or so.

Before that it was an electronics thing.

And anyways, the photography stuff probably makes for better reading than the alternative – whinging about the terrible crippling back-pain I’ve been suffering since the end of June.

So – more pictures and camera talk to come! 🙂

Ow!Box!

Posted 2010.12.07 20.07 in Hobbies, Pointless Blather

What do you get when you mix electronics, boredom, a pinch of depression, and a warped sense of humour? Well, an Ow!Box! is one possibility…

Yes, it’s a fun-for-all-ages way to cause a little pain — without leaving any pesky scars or evidence. Just touch the two screwheads and crank up the juice. How long can you last? How much can you take?

Impress your friends, baffle your family, make it into a drinking game, or just wire up some chairs around the house.

The function is simple: Power from a 9v battery is run through a 555 timer chip to create DC pulses. These pulses are used to trigger a simple transister, which tweaks the primary winding of a step-up transformer. The secondary winding of the transformer is wired to the neon bulb as well as the touch contacts. A BNC port also allows the signal to be routed….elsewhere.

Put in a fresh battery, turn it on, and have fun!

The Line

This week, I feel as if I’ve crossed a line.

For a long time, I’ve been dealing with various health issues which, taken together, I would describe as making me feel unhealthy. This week I feel like things have just teetered over the edge from unhealthy, to dying.

I don’t mean to be alarmist. I’m not saying that some doctor has stamped a Best Before date on me or anything.

It’s just a sort of semi-subtle sensation, if you’ll forgive the alliteration (hey it rhymes!), that I’ve shifted from living with poor health to dying of poor health.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom. It actually makes me feel just a little bit of concern. Makes me very slightly inclined to try and do something about it.

Anyhow, no panic. I’m not going anywhere for some time yet, it’s just a feeling I had.
