Updated Already

I couldn’t leave it alone, of course. Had to take it apart again today and make an update.

That thing with the WizNet module hanging sometimes, I had applied a very makeshift fix to yesterday. See, the WizNet doesn’t have its own power-on reset, but it needs it. They suggest you use a digital pin from your uC but I was out of pins. So I used a 10uF capacitor, which was enough to ground the reset line on power-up or manual reboot.

The problem was, I had my WizNet reset tied to my Arduino / ATMega reset, and the capacitor meant I couldn’t update the programming. At least, not without temporarily removing that capacitor.

So it turned out, I did have a spare pin. I had been holding A3 in reserve. Just incase the temperature readings from the Chronodot remained inaccurate due to the heat from the WizNet, I was prepared to add a TMP-36 analog temperature sensor, and dangle that a few inches below the enclosure. Luckily, with the thermostat mounted vertically on the wall, and the Chronodot a good 1″ out with open air around it, the temperature readings are accurate.

So I pulled it open, removed the capacitor, and unhooked the WizNet reset line from the Arduino / ATMega reset line, and tied it instead to A3. A few quick changes to the software, and presto, no more hang-on-powerup and it can be reprogrammed without any soldering. Yay!

Also, I decided to go ahead and show off the guts. Why not? Just be warned, if you’re easily upset by ugly wiring hacks and poorly-planned soldering and random wires and tapes and dead-bug construction… well just don’t look.

And finally, here’s a link to the updated software. The zip file also contains a text file that outlines the pinout & functions for the ATMega chip, the WizNet module, and the function of the HVAC lines — or at least, how they function in my house.

Those Darn iPods

What is it about those crazy iPods? They just don’t wanna stay put-together!

This was iPodasaurus, a third-generation iPod, from the days when 40GB was top-of-the-line, black and white was all the rage, and USB was called Firewire.

That’s not where the Wiiings go…

Yesterday, instead of doing chores or whatever, I ended up sitting around watching episodes of an old TV show on the internet. I might still buy the DVDs if I find them, on account of the ads they kept inserting into the stream.

I say ads but really it was just the same ad, over and over. Four times per episode, thirteen episodes. It wasn’t even an entertaining or funny commercial. Some strange Redbull thing that involved dogs. And they made sure to draw naughty-bits on the dogs which I thought was particularily wierd.

So throughout the afternoon I had fifty-two opportunities to wonder why a Redbull commercial would intentionaly put naughty bits on animated dogs, and does that contribute to Redbull sales?

Maybe it was an experiment.

I certainly don’t feel any urge to buy Redbull. It’s very expensive and I’m not entirely convinced that it doesn’t contain some kind of exotic carcinogen. Though I suppose now it’s also linked in my brain with canine porn and bestiality. Again, not sure if that was the marketing plan or not.

I don’t really understand the whole energy-drink craze.

Snail Pile!

I’ve never seen them do this before – all five of my snails gathered up together in the corner next to a filter. And it appears that there’s some, ah, romance going on.

pileon

From top to bottom, there’s Shelly (all by herself), then Speed Racer, though (s)he’s mostly hidden behind Little Buddy who might be getting amorous, or might just be hanging on because he’s annoying that way. Then there’s Big Blue, and she’s almost certainly being ‘romanced’ by the little golden Munchkin who’s sitting on Big Blue’s side.

And to my chagrin and annoyance, there are also two of those dang-blasted planorbid snails in there as well, one on the Munchkin’s operculum and one on Big Blue’s operculum. Grumble grumble nuts and curses.

Little Buddy certainly seems to fancy himself a super stud – he won’t leave Speed Racer or Big Blue alone…
