Random Musings – Movie Edition

Star Wars

A couple weeks ago I finally saw the new Star Wars film.

Things I Liked: Rei, Finn, Poe, and BB-8.

Things I Didn’t Like: C-3PO – sorry I’ve just never liked that guy. Ever. And he’s been in every damned movie.

Things I Didn’t Understand: Why did the bad guys seem to come from the Harry Potter universe? I’m not even a potter fan but the big bad guy looked like Voldemort, and the little moody bad guy looked like a young moody Severus Snape.

Random Thing That Irked Me: It bothered me that Rei lost her nifty little blaster like 30 minutes after she got it. No idea why, it was just one of those little things. That was a gift Rei, take better care of it!

Random Things I Hope Get Explained Elsewhere: So Rei found Luke and he was just standing there on top of that island / mountain with just some weathered rocks and a good view. How long’s he been there? Where does he sleep? What does he eat? Where does he poop? The nice view is only good for so long before you get cold and tired and hungry. Maybe he has a little Yoda Hut just around the corner that they didn’t show in the closing scene.

Dead Pool

Last week I finally saw the Dead Pool film.

One of my biggest peeves in movies and tv shows is where the narrative timeline jumps around. Like when a TV show opens with some scene of destruction or chaos, then the scene shifts to a peaceful quiet whatever and the text-over says “24 hours earlier” I just change the channel. Hate that crap.

Dead Pool was entertaining enough for me to hang in there through that sort of thing. There’s a fight sequence that stops for two flashbacks that take up like 2/3 of the movie, it’s so long that I forget it’s a flashback and jarring when we go back to the original narrative timeline.

But, entertaining enough that I let it slide.

The only thing that confused me, because I’m not into comic books and all I know about DC and Marvel is that they both exist and are separate, was trying to understand if the X-men and the Avengers are in the same universe?

I mean, the big battle in the junkyard, they seemed to have a wrecked Shield hover-carrier thing there. So that’s avengers universe. But they had that tin guy from X-men and he was trying to get DeadPool to join the X-men.

And at the very very end DeadPool mentions Nick Fury. So Avengers / Shield stuff.

So are X-Men / Avengers / Shield in the same universe? Or was that all part of the 4-th wall breaking stuff and not ‘serious’?

Ooh and one other thing – Negasonic Teenage Warhead was fun but what happens in 5 or 6 years? Does she become Negasonic Adult Warhead? And in 20 years, Negasonic Middle-Aged Warhead? Or does she never age?

Not Very Confident

So I saw the doctor again today. She thinks my leg looks like it’s getting better, and decided not to extend the antibiotics any further. What I have, will run out on Sunday.

I questioned her, along the lines of “Really? Are you sure?” because my leg’s still swollen from my toes up to above my knee. My knee and ankle are both swollen enough that I have a restricted range of motion. I’m still experiencing almost constant pain in my shin and calf. And the leg is still so sensitive that at times it hurts just having heavy blankets on it.

Never before in my life have I ever been on antibiotics, and then the doctor has figured to let the medication end before the symptoms are gone. It’s always been the opposite – you take the antibiotics for 3 or 4 days after the last of the symptoms have left. Heck that’s why antibiotics usually come with a notice “Keep taking this even if you feel better!” because you need to ensure every last trace of the bacteria is eradicated, before the meds stop.

So I’ve kind of resigned myself to the idea that next week I’ll probably have to go back to the hospital.

Pet Peeve #16

Getting a voicemail like this: Hello, this is XXXXX, I have some questions about YYYYY please get back to me.

Or getting an email like this: Hello Stephanie, I have some questions about YYYYY please let me know when would be a good time to discuss. Sincerely, XXXXX

Do you see the problem with both of those scenarios? Incase anyone reading this is one of the people who do this, let me tell you the problem.

If you have questions, ask them! Don’t just tell me that you have a question, tell me what the question is!

In either of the scenarios I described above, the person has just wasted some of both of our time. Now I have to write them back or look up their number and call them back, just to I can ask what the hell they wanted to ask me in the first place. Why do people do this? Is it a control thing?

To Share (This) or Not to Share (This)

Posted 2009.08.07 14.00 in Computers/Internet/Technology

So I’ve been waffling on this “Share This” thing. I’m not really up on this stuff myself, I’ve never used it, but my friend Lezley told me it was good and important so I put it on my site. The thing is, it runs entirely on the Share This server, so every time someone is viewing one of my pages, they’re also partially redirected to download stuff from the Share This site. And not just two words and a little logo either – it’s a lot of stuff.  Scripts, style sheets, a bunch of logos, who knows what else. Honestly, I don’t really like it – it seems strange and mysterious and opaque to me.

Most WordPress plugins are pretty open and upfront. I mean, if you can read PHP (which isn’t that hard if you just take your time and don’t let it scare you), you can look at the plugin and get at least a bit of an idea what it does. You can do that with the Share This plugin, but what the Share This plugin does is basically just tell your guests to load a bunch of stuff from elsewhere – and you can’t change that stuff. It’s some digging just to get to see that stuff, what with all the javascript voodoo and all that.

Aside from the opacity of its function and my lack of understanding of its purpose, there is the bottom line fact that it slows things down. I’m on a fast connection – but when I can see a noticable change in speed between Share This and don’t Share This, that gives me misgivings. In fact, if there is a problem and for whatever reason the Share This stuff isn’t working, it makes it look like my site is having problems.

So I’ve turned it off, turned it back on, off and on again. I don’t know what’s best. So I’ve made a poll, and I’m asking you. And, please feel free to comment as well.

Cheers!

The poll has been closed, with the votes in at 8 votes against Share This and 1 vote for it.

Stupid Math Answer

Posted 2009.04.21 9.41 in Pointless Blather

A while back I posted a Stupid Math Question which was designed to test people’s cognative abilities, comprehension, attention to detail, and above-all, the ability to see beyond the obvious.

The post contained a lengthy set-up paragraph which was phrased in a format remeniscent of the detailed questions we used to get in math class at school; a scenario was presented, some facts provided, numbers thrown at you, then finally the actual question or equation which you were instructed to “solve”.

In my own Stupid Math Question, the actual question was was placed separate to the “informative” paragraph, the question was bold and underlined. The question was:

Can you tell how many sidings both trains will pass before one of them must pull over so they can cross?

Read on, to discover the answer!
