Broken Pen

Posted 2010.09.14 21.13 in Computers/Internet/Technology

Now this time, it’s totally not what you think! I didn’t break it — I took it apart to fix it.

Honest!

See, I have this Wacom Bamboo Tablet for doing drawing on the computer. I’ve only just started playing with it a couple weeks ago. But I don’t have enough desk space to keep it out all the time, so when it’s not in use, I store it in a ‘cubbyhole’ in the hutch on my desk. So far, so good.

The tablet has a pen. The special pen that makes the tablet go. The pen is all full of delicate electronics, but it’s very lightweight, and rolls easily, and is not attached in any way to any thing…

Snail Baby Graduation

A cupfull of snail babies (pea-size to marble-size) get released into the grown-up snail tank.

So Many Snails

Posted 2010.08.22 9.15 in Aquaria

A couple days ago I was doing some big aquarium maintenance on the 38-gal snail tank. Basically I was bored of the black gravel and wanted to remove it, and do some redecorating.

I’ve done that sort of thing before and generally the corydoras and frogs know to cower in the opposite side of the tank to where I’m working. The snails however are too curious and tend to try and get in the way all the time.

So I temporarily hauled the lot of them out of the tank and plunked them all in the nursery with the babies.

It should be blatantly obvious but I’ll say it anyways: don’t overcrowd your aquariums! This was probably marginally acceptable because the situation only lasted for about 2 hours, and the nursery had been cleaned & had a water change before, and again after. But for the 2 hours, it was a 2 1/2 gallon enclosure of crazy snail claustrophobia…

Whaddaya Do with a Dingoo?

Aside from hardware hacking or mucking about with the kernel and bootloader, that is?

I play Ur-Quan Masters, aka Star Control 2. I don’t play the long adventure/campaign/story stuff, I just play the Super Melee mode. The computer gets some ships, I get some ships, and we fight it out till one side is defeated. UQM is available for Linux through various distros.

I also play Tank Commander, a Battle-Zone-like game made for the GameBoy Advance. It’s my favorate GBA game, though sometimes it is a bit frustrating (three gold enemies in a row, and no shield upgrades?!) Tank Commander is a GBA home-brew, and a very fine one at that.

Snailopolis

Posted 2010.03.01 18.14 in Aquaria

The mythical city of snails, spoken of only in hushed whispers since time immemorable.

Or maybe it’s just my 38-gallon snail aquarium. You know, one or the other.

Graduation Day 2

About a month ago, my little zebra danio graduated from the nursery tank and moved into the big fish tank with all the grownup fish. It had taken him about 4 months to reach 1-inch long, with most of that time spent in various small tanks and containers, before he went into the magic nursery.

Today, my two baby peppered corydora catfish (Corydoras paleatus) had their own graduation day, moving out of the magic nursery and into the big 38-gallon tank where their parents live. It took these two only about 6 or 7 weeks to reach the 1-inch length.

Here’s one of the young corydoras, exploring the new big tank. Before releasing them into the big tank, they spent some time floating in a cup at the top of the tank, to get accustomed to the new temperature. You can see the two of them, along with a baby snail stowaway:

Half a Cup of Snail Babies

I just moved another half-cup of babie snails out of the nursery and into the big tank. Actually it was more like a quarter-cup but they don’t all stay still at the bottom. “The contents of this package may have shifted during transportation.”

The pic shows them and their cup floating around in the big tank, doing the whole “adjust to the new temperature and water” thing. I counted out thirty of them. With the sixty I moved over earlier, that’s 90 babies now in the big tank…. and over a hundred still in the nursery tank.

Once they’d had enough time to adjust, someone came along and tipped over the cup…
