The Week in Review

Canada Post sucks.

Vancouver Canucks failed.

Work was hectic and occasionally stressful.

The weather was ok.

That is all.

First Day of School

Posted 2010.09.07 9.39 in Pointless Blather, Work by Stephanie

It’s always funny to see the subtle changes on the first day of school.

Traffic is moderately busier. The drive-through coffee shop is about 300% busier. And of course, there’s kids out and about, running across roads and crossing intersections on a red signal and all that fun stuff.

The best part of course is the little schadenfreude of knowing their summer break is over and they’re all going to be stuck behind desks for the next 9 or 10 months.

Ha ha ha.

Makes it a little easier for the rest of us who don’t get the 2-month break.

Munday…

Not a fan of Monday – and the morning is especially unloved. Once I take over the world, I think I’ll extend the weekends to include Monday, so everyone gets a 3-day weekend.

Yesterday was Fathers’ Day. I went to the hospital to spend some time with my dad. He got through last week’s surgery ok, but he’s been in a lot of pain. It’s difficult to see him like that – I imagine it’s always hard for someone to see one of their parents all weakened and suffering. Looking ahead, hopefully he’ll be well enough to go home this week.

Also ahead, there’s like a week and a half till the end of the month and I’ve got a small mountain of work to get through by then. Between that and visits to the hospital et cetera, I’m already feeling all tapped out and exhausted.

In other mundane news, the world cup is into it’s 2nd week and England is acting like they’re homesick and want to get out of South Africa as quickly as possible. They just have to endure one more match on Wednesday then they can pack up and leave. Booooo. I don’t know who else to cheer for; I guess I’ll decide that on a match-by-match basis.

Right now I’m rooting for North Korea as they face Portugal… No particular reason other than I tend to root for the underdogs, and I like watching big upsets.

Back to the Grind

Having the statutory holidays falling on a Friday, then a Monday, then a Friday, led to some wonderfully long weekends. I’m pretty sure we’re in for the almost same thing again next year, with a Friday, Monday, Monday arrangement.

While I know that retail was probably crazy-busy last week, it was rather quiet and peaceful at my office last week – we all came in but not much happened, so it was like half-days. Yeah – four day weekend, three quiet days, then a three day weekend.

I could get used to that. Sigh.

Then pow, today it’s back to normal. Full days, full weeks, things going on, busy busy. Month-end, year-end, stuff to do, the fun never ends.

Random Updates

So much going on, but aside from the occasional rant, I’m not focused enough to make complete topics of anything in particular. So, point form.

  • Snail babies – lots of them. Clutches number one, two, and four all had a whole lotta babies in them. Clutch number three was mostly a dud. However, I’m not finding myself overrun with baby snails so I assume that the die-off rate has been high after all. I’ve only seen 4 or 5 snails that are larger than a BB and 3 of them are definately from the second clutch. I don’t know if there’s actually a thousand million baby snails hiding under the gravel where I can’t see them, but I figure if they were, they’d have to be getting bigger and I’d start seeing them…
  • Winter crazies – as the end of the year approaches, the days get shorter, the dark gets darker, I’m filled with an overarching sense of running out of time. Projects are coming due, crisiis are looming, and stress is building. Monday I was having a panic-attack or anxiety-attack or something, and stopped functioning completely for a few hours. Then there was the insomnia and general lack of restful sleep. By Tuesday the panic/anxiety had subsided a bit, but it’s starting to build up again now.
  • Work hazies – part and parcel with the above. Not sure which is the cause and which is the effect. Work deadlines lead to stress, stress leads to crazies, crazies lead to malfunctions, malfunctions lead to missed deadlines, and it’s all this big spiral of confusion and discombobulation.
  • Tax mazes – one of the companies I work for is getting a tax audit. I just made the connection, the audit is starting on the 21st – the winter solstace. Also known as The Darkest Day Of The Year. Seems appropriate. And I promise never to say the word ‘nitwits‘ while filling out tax forms, ever again.
  • X-mas lazies – not the right word, but I’m running out of things that rhyme. I don’t wanna x-mas. Bah humbug! Hah bumhug! I don’t mind buying gifts for folks, but I don’t have time to shop and don’t know / can’t remember what people want. And I don’t want anything tangible (though I’d really like More Time.) I just want to cancel the holiday this year. The only part of the tradition I care to maintain is the Ice-Cold-Beer-on-a-Hot-Xmas-Morning. And maybe some hors-d’oveurs from M&M.

That’s about it for now. No pics or illustrations, no time.

Mmmm… Manic..

Posted 2009.12.11 17.48 in Life On Drugs, Pointless Blather by Stephanie

The mania didn’t keep me awake (much) last night – in bed by 11pm, asleep by 1am. Two hours to fall asleep is pretty typical for me.

Even better though, the mania has still been with me all day today. I got in to work and was nonstop again on the Project. I feel like I got more done in the last 2 days than in the previous 2 weeks. It’s been swell!

The only downside is that none of my other work got done. When I’m grooving on the Project, I don’t wanna do anything else. So I have to go in to the office on the weekend for a day, to catch up the other stuff.

In the meantime, I’m enjoying a nummy Adult Beverage, some dinner, and contemplating if I want to keep working tonight or not.

Mmmm. Adult beverage…

I think they’re hatching!

Posted 2009.11.17 8.36 in Aquaria by Stephanie

Aaaauuuuggghhhh! I think the first clutch is beginning to hatch, but I have to go to work!

Hatching!

You can just see something ‘shiney’ towards the bottom of the clutch – it’s a baby, with what looks like a yellow shell and dark body. After I snapped the picture I went back and looked and it was gone but there was another one, what looked like a white / clear shell and dark body.

But I gotta go to work!

Wah!
